The new CZWG website is about to launch.
Before you go to our existing site, we are pleased to
announce the completion of Maggie's Nottingham and Canada Water Library.
The new 14 million 'Super Library' in Southwark has opened to the public. The inverted pyramid form contains a readily accessible café, performance space, internet points and popular books within a small footprint at ground level, whilst the expanding shape above enables the containment of the main library within a single, galleried, skylit double volume. The whole is clad in aluminum sheets, anodised a light bronze with sequined perforations.
The idea of a free standing object in space is quite appropriate for a library, since it is a portal to the discovery of other worlds. As a piece of sculpture it binds together a tube station, a stretch of open water and a plaza and makes the precursor landmark of a substantial new development on London’s Canada Water.
The new Maggie's Nottingham has opened its doors to the public. Designed by Piers Gough, Partner CZWG, with interiors by Paul Smith, the new centre for people affected by cancer, sits on a prominent site near the main entrance to Nottingham City Hospital.
The near symmetrical design and generous height of Maggie's Nottingham allows the building to have a sense of space and balance. The oval building of green glazed ceramic tiles floats over a smaller basement, with plants and trees surrounding. Balconies extend from the kitchen and sitting rooms and provide places from which to look out onto the surrounding landscape. Scent and texture within the landscape help to create a secluded and uplifting area for people to enjoy.
