Tower Hamlets, London
Client: Guildmore Ltd.
Date: Under construction
Poplar Baths residential building is the residential component of the London Borough of Tower Hamlets’ historic Baths (1934) regeneration urban renewal. The renewal comprises two parts: the new residential building south of the Baths, designed by CZWG, and restoration of the Grade II listed Baths by PRS Architects. CZWG, PRS Architects and Guildmore Ltd were selected as the development partners in March 2013, and planning was granted in September 2013. The residential building occupies a former little used ball park and garages site; a constrained urban site between the Baths’ existing residential buildings, and the DLR rail track. The building will provide 60 affordable housing units. There is a varied mix of apartment types in acceptance with local needs. The proposals offer character and legibility to a neglected urban space, bringing stimulus to enhance the pattern of buildings and public space. Located within the historic zone just north of Canary Wharf, the Poplar Baths are one of the historic focal points of the area dating from 1934 and listed Grade II since 2001.
‘This scheme will provide much-needed housing and facilities the community can enjoy, including excellent leisure facilities.’ Councillor Rabina Khan, Cabinet Member for Housing, December 2013
