Gilbert was technically brilliant and a tortured genius. His erotic works were almost as big a mismatch to the fine rooms of the Royal Academy as Lutyens had been to the Hayward. Black gauze and cracks of daylight produced an effect of semi-cover up to the putti.
“…the exhibition succeeds on about four or five different levels at once. First of all it’s theatrically enormously successful…it’s a kind of coup in black draperies billowing away to suggest symbolist decadence; a burst of gold for portraits and so on, so it’s intensely enjoyable”Marina Vaizey, Critics Forum, BBC Radio 3, March 1986
