Charles Jenck's Jacuzzi
The Thematic House, Notting Hill
Client: Charles Jenks
Date: Completed 1983
Having decided that an inverted domed room would make an ideal hot-tub (feet in the cupola), a hilarious afternoon was spent viewing the client’s extensive slide collection of domes-upside-down. Having put the borrow back in Borromini, three of the surrounding four windows were also turned upside down, though the awkward junction with the main garden elevation could not be solved by a whole renaissance of pendentives. The second Jacuzzi on the ceiling pretending to be on the floor is probably overdoing things a bit.
Jencks brought in CZWG as a part of the team of architects and artists who worked on different parts of the house. The point was to go just a little over the top, and CZWG obliged with trompe l'oeil terrazzo for the jacuzzi.
