66 Vauxhall

London

Originally conceived as a Mark II version of Royalty Studios, a previous success in Notting Hill, 66 Vauxhall develops the same ideas whilst introducing some new ones. Similar are the two self-contained single staircase buildings, but the departure is the larger building consisting of two wings about a central entrance, adding more flexibility in the size of letting unit. At Royalty Studios the top floors in the roof space were popular. At 66 Vauxhall the roofs are therefore more deliberately sculptural and their curves give rise to the single strong architectural element of interlocking butterfly curves in pre-cast concrete defining the buildings and focusing on the entrances. The only other refinement, to what is essentially a plain brick box, is a subtle taper to the brick panels giving more visual weight to the base of the building. An additional ingredient was a two storey building of small light industrial units served by an access balcony. Client: Inner City Enterprises
