The project, set in 327 acres of re-landscaped former open cast coal mine close to the M1 between Rotherham and Sheffield, is a major leisure, entertainment, sports and convention destination on a stage of exuberant architecture. Into this undulating parkland, a perfectly flat 400 metre diameter disc is incised, covered in car park and shrouded with planted pergola. An elaborate, complex arrangement of multi-coloured elements floats at its centre, a structure intended to be the largest indoor facility of its kind in Europe. The ‘cushion’ box form of richly coloured stainless steel contain functions from convention centre to sports experience, whilst black ‘concertina’ forms house the hotels. Cascading glass links the twelve floors to the water experience of the parkland below.
