Black Lion Street
Brighton
The Black Lion Street Redevelopment is situated between the Seafront and the famous Lanes of Brighton. Jamie Oliver’s new restaurant “ Jamie’s Italian” occupies the ground floor of this CZWG designed complex. The scheme consists of buildings that have been remodelled and restored to comprise the restaurant, office space and a karaoke bar. The upper floors are funky open plan offices with large al fresco terraces at the rear, balconies and bay windows on the front. The street elevation of seaside weatherboarding has idiosyncratic A shaped openings, like loop hole frames, rising to different heights derived from the differing bay width of the re-clad structural frame. They give the building an unexpected resonance with the narrow fronted pub next door. The newly partially pedestrianised street forms one of the main walkways and entrances from the Seafront to the eclectic Lanes and has been enhanced with artwork by Ricky Delany with assistance from the children at local school, Middle Street Primary. Jamie’s restaurant spills out onto the widened pavement of the partially closed street increasing the sense of Mediterranean good life.
