This site is part of the first phase of development of a masterplan for a new residential and commercial quarter, regenerating former industrial land and giving public access to the canalside. The proposal contributes a 75-flat affordable residential building with a ground floor community health facility. The L-shaped block, standing at the entrance to the masterplan area, acts as a corner to a new street leading to the canal edge. In order to create more prominence, the wings of the block are ‘dislocated’ and the difference between the two important elevations emphasised in surface colour and window treatments. To the East Street elevation, a colonnade celebrates its public role as entrance to the health facility, with columns and mullions above in different colours, animating the flatness of the façade.
